Russian Wooden Toys
These charming toys are made in the village of Bogorodsk (now Noginsk) in the Sergiev Posad district of Moscow Province. The toys are carefully hand-carved from linden wood. They operate on a pendulum mechanism: when the wooden ball is swung in a gentle circular motion, the toy performs an action. Since the early 19th century, the craftsmen of Bogorodsk have been making these toys which have delighted both adults and children for generations. The humor and good will expressed in the toys unites people across the world in a small but enduring way. |
