Welcome to our newest internet showing, this time featuring seven traditional works by Palekh artist Galina Mochalina. I met Galina and her husband on my recent trip to Russia and it could well have been the highlight of all my visit there. Here is a short bio on the artist, along with seven lovely boxes from her.
Galina Mochalina (nee Gunina) was born 19 August 1966 in the village of Palekh. She finished Palekh Art School in 1986 fulfilling both her own, and her father's dream, who also wanted to become an artist at an early age, but was dissuaded from the profession by his parents. Mochalina has been an artist for more than 30 years, and now works in this capacity for a factory where she draws lacquer miniatures which are given as high end gifts by company management to foreign companies and politicians. Among those receiving Mochalina's mini masterpieces have been the governor of Vladimir Oblast, and the mayor of Paris, France. Mochalina has had her work displayed in various exhibitions over the years, in many different regions of Russia. Mochalina has two children, a son (Aleksei) and daughter (Anna). Her first husband sadly passed on, and now she is married to Mikhail, an engineer at the same factory where she works as an artist. Mochalina's miniatures are known for their vivid imagery and crisp precision in details; her works are a joy to hold, and perfectly exemplify the highest standards of Palekh art.. |
