Lacquer Box Showing
Thursday, December 10th, 2009
Welcome. Today our attention focuses on the villages of Palekh and Kholui, where eight of the nine pieces in this week's showing were painted. Leading the way is "The Debate (Day and Night)" a very intriguing work by one of Palekh's leading artists - Aleksej Kochupalov. Following this are two larger boxes by Palekh artist V. Terentiev, one depicting a famous fairy tale, one showing a lovely folk scene, and each beautifully detailed throughout. Several boxes from Kholui are next including a panoramic view of Moscow, home of some of the world's most beautiful architecture, and two of Suzdal, another historic town. (Which one do you like best?) And not all fans of the village of Fedoskino will be disappointed with this week's showing, either, as we did include a very cute and beautifully done miniature from that village called "Thumbelina". Also, please note that we have a Showing B today where you will find a small but nice assortment of handpainted boxes, too. It may be the perfect place to find that last minute gift.
See you next Thursday!
