Lacquer Box Showing
Thursday, November 19th, 2009
This week's showing features four innovative boxes by the Russian artist Tatyana Smirnova. A novel interpretation of the Russian fairy tale "Sadko" starts it off, followed by three other very nice works. We especially like the tiny casket "Father Frost" which puts the face of the crusty old guy on the top lid and four miniature winter scenes on the side. Smirnova travels back and forth between the states and Russia, but has never lost her touch for creating boxes of extraordinary beauty.Enjoy the showing, and come back next week on Thursday (Thanksgiving!) when we should have the beginning of a major new lacquer box shipment from Russia. Our broker has alerted us that it is now in Baltimore and awaiting customs clearance. If it is in our hands in the next couple days, we will definitely have time to get a sampling of the boxes on for Thanksgiving. There are more than 100 unique boxes in this shipment!
