Lacquer Box Showing
Thursday, August 20th, 2009
Good afternoon. Our showing today begins with a lovely piece by Fedoskino artist Natalya Orlova called "Apple Blossom Time". The work consists not only of a box but also a base which gently holds it in place. Both are exquisitely done and some of the flowers are sculpted in relief, giving it an even more unique look and feel. It has been awhile since we've carried boxes from this artist and we are excited that we have a chance to show something from her again. With all her talent, it is not surprising that a number of pieces by Orlova have appeared in the recent book on Russian lacquer art Russian Lacquer Miniatures: New Visions. The other pieces being shown today are quite nice, as well. But if you want two that might help you through the hot days of August then you don't need to look farther than "The Mermaid" or "Dolphins", which take place in cool refreshing blue seas.Thank you for joining us, and come back next Thursday when we will be showing a box by another Fedoskino star, E. Khomutinnikova.
