Lacquer Box Showing
Thursday, June 25th, 2009
We have a small showing for you today, but it is not without some exceptional miniatures. With the inclusion of one of her recent boxes in the book "Russian Lacquer Miniatures: New Visions" (Page 153), Yulia Danilina is becoming known to lacquer box collectors on a broader scale, and the two works that we have from her today are fine examples of her delicate style. However, its Fedoskino artist T. Volodina who leads the showing off with her "Thumbelina", and who would have ever thought that small little lady bugs crawling over the surface of a box would contribute to such an exquisite looking piece! We also included one small superbly done icon in this showing, painted in the village of Palekh. The village was doing this type of art long before the boxes, and in recent years icon art is enjoying a resurgance of interest, partly due to the demand from people and organizations in Russia itself. Enjoy the showing, and be sure to come back next week for more!
