Lacquer Box Showing
Welcome back to our very first showing of 2009, where start the year off with a small but enchanting group of these miniature wonders. Leading the way is the smallest one of all, "Evening Glow", by Fedoskino artist Yulia Danilina, which shows the image of a young maiden emerging from a luxurious fusion of reds and gold, and a subtle inlay of mother-of-pearl. The box is exquisite, and the artist told us that it spent a number of months being exhibited at "TsDKh" - the Central House of Artists in Moscow. Danilina's fame in lacquer box circles has risen recently, too, with the inclusion of one of her pieces in the recent book "Russian Lacquer Miniatures: New Visions". Meanwhile, those looking for a more traditional piece will undoubtedly be impressed by "Portrait of Girl" and the extraordinary realism of Fedoskino artist Golubenkov. Click on the picture - you'll see what we mean. Finishing up the top row is a box that you may remember from the past, by Fedoskino artist Sergey Chistov. The box is similar to this one, which was sold months ago, but on closer inspection, you will see that the new box has its own nuances in color, size and details, reaffirming the notion that no two Russian lacquer boxes are ever identical. Meanwhile, two good sized traditional scenes, with painting on the sides, make "The Snow Maiden" and "The Flying Carpet" excellent buys, and the lovely "Gold Beauty" finishes the showing off.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to stop in, and be sure to come back next Thursday for our next showing when we will feature more beautiful pieces, mostly from Fedoskino again.
