Artist Profile - Nikolaj Zotov

Nikolaj Aleksandrovich Zotov (b. 1960) is one of the leading artists working in Fedoskino today. His works are featured in a number of books, including L. Pirogova, 200 Years of Russian Lacquery: Fedoskino (Kaliningrad, 1996), N. Krestovskaya and Lacquer Miniatures: Fedoskino (Moscow, 1995). Examples of his work are held by the Fedoskino Factory Fund of Miniature Painting, as well as private collections in the United States, Great Britain and other countries.

Zotov's miniatures are often characterized by a pastel palette painted on a pale background, and enhanced by dramatic mother-of-pearl inlays. His works frequently have a sculptural component to them: they are not merely standard shapes, but frequently have carved-out "windows", graceful and organic pillar-like features, sinuous edges that evoke waves or clam-shells, and three-dimensional carvings. N. Krestovskaya has noted the innovative nature of Zotov's miniatures, and describes how his works "beckon to be touched and handled; there is something alive lurking in their prominent flowing shapes, rounded corners, shafts at the base and refined ball-shaped legs." Works such as Zotov's are treated "not merely as pieces of miniature painting but above all as genuine works of art in which shape, color scheme and decor are on an even par with painting." They are complete artistic creations. It can be no surprise that his original and unforgettable pieces are highly prized by discerning collectors around the world.
