Born in 1957, Evgeniya Nebogatova graduated Palekh art school in 1981 and has been painting beautiful lacquer miniatures ever since. In a manifestation of her own artistic progression and creativity, her style dramatically changed beginning around 1991 when she took on a much more distinct approach to the art form. Since that time, in creating each of her unique and original works, Nebogatova fills up much more of the drawing surface with details, including prominent and expressive gold and silver lines. By doing so she effectively leaves out much of the black negative space that has been the traditional Palekh standard for decades. Her tendency for bold metallic brush strokes creates a keen sense of motion -- nothing seems static as characters are running, flying, gesturing, battling. The powerful dynamics at work also offset any sense of clutter that might result from so much of the painting surface being used. Meanwhile, the ornate architecture in the background of her pieces provides a firm and constant setting in which the action can take place. Evgeniya says that she approaches and executes every box with much enthusiasm. She is an artist and loves it. She can tackle any subject matter even some of the more obscure fairy tales (not just from Russia but from other countries, too). Both she and her are both mentioned as prominent Palekh artists in the Lucy Maxym's book Russian Lacquers, Legends and Fairy Tales. It also deserves mention that Nebogatova also excels at drawing animals, but this shouldn't seem surprising when you consider the Nebogatovs have a veritable zoo at home, including a dog, parrot, mouse and hamster! Evgeniya lives with her husband, Mikhail, also a painter, and has two children. And at the age of only 44, she has a new grandchild, too!
