The images of Arwen and Aragorn (from the Lord of the Rings trilogy) are beautifully drawn here by Palekh artist Vera Smirnova. Arwen gives up her immortality for the love of Aragorn, and the two marry after the War of the Ring. Here Aragorn is getting ready for battle and gazes into the distance, preparing mentally for things to come. Arwen looks there, too. As the famous author Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said "Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction", and that could not be better exemplified than here.
Surrounding the lovers is a lavish display of foliage and flowers of different varieties. Two long-beaked birds hover around one of the flowers. Each element of the drawing is detailed with brilliant gold and silver lines. The faces of both Arwen and Aragorn are very realistically painted with just the right amount of nuance and shading and closely resemble the actual characters from the movie. The sides are adorned with a traditional gold ornament, along with some small golden stars spaced here and there. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and sits on four small round legs. The interior is red. Under the lid is written "Aragorn and Arwen" within a small small area of even more gold line decoration. The artist wrote her name, year, and village on the bottom of the main drawing. Superb and very romantic work by one of Palekh's top artists.
