Here is an interesting little box with a subject that we have never seen before. A man is passed out in front of two barrels which most likely are holding wine. Not hard to figure out what might have happened. Four men look on, and a young pup runs to his rescue. The scene and faces are dark and muted, but the box sizzles with radiant gold leaf lines throughout, and there is a high degree of precision to them, as well. A modest gold ornament frames the composition, and there is another one that adorns the sides. The box has a hinge and a red interior. On the bottom a Palekh insignia is printed. On the bottom of the composition are written the name of the village, the year, an inventory number, and the name of the artists (the Pinchuk brothers.) The box was done 25 years ago, but has recently been relacquered so it is as shiny and fresh as ever.
