A young maiden carries two pails of water over her shoulders on a milkmaid's yoke and draws the attention of a handsome young man in her path. Both the man's and woman's clothing are drawn mostly in reds and white, the two most traditional and iconic colors in Russia dress. The man has a fancier look to him, however, and the look on the maiden's face seems to indicate that she is already smitten by his charms. To the far right are two more girls filling up buckets of water at the well -- they have a job to do. An older man with a cane, and a younger boy stand near a typical rural house, complete with "nalihniki" on the windows. Beautiful gold highlighted trees in the back provide a gorgeous setting and three birds in the far off in the distance stand out against the traditional Palekh background. The box is smartly decorated with a gold and silver ornament around the drawing, and another around the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the top. It sits on four small legs. The artist wrote her name, title, village and year of completion on the bottom of the box. Beautiful!
