Fishing (2015)from Palekh by Galina MochalinaDimensions: 5.00" x 3.25" x 1.00"(12.70 x 8.26 x 2.54 cm) Gallery Price: $ 645.00 Internet Price: $ 595.00 None currently available |
This eyecatching box by Galina Mochalina shows a fisherman in the boat above trying his luck in snagging a fish or two from the water below. The fish look eager and he probably won't have too many problems. (Or could the green fish be one of the smarter ones, and just be laughing at the bait?) Regardless, the drawing has a unique and whimsical look to it and is compositionally divided in two, featuring the top half, relatively static with a somewhat sleepy looking fisherman; and the bottom half, a flowing aquatic world with fish, moving water, and the swaying underwater foliage. Fine gold silver lines and embellish it all and reinforce the characteristic Palekh look. The drawing is framed by a nicely done ornament on the top. Around the sides is an even more elaborately done ornament that incorporates a small fish into two the sides. The box is made out of paper mache and sits on four small rounded legs. There is a hinge to the left. The name of the artist, the village and year are written in gold at the bottom of the drawing. A very beautiful original work by Mochalina.
