Nestled on a rock in the midst of flourishing greenery, the shepherd is playing a flute for a maid sitting nearby. The maid is folding her hands timidly and looks away, as the young lad is courting her. The painting is permeated with romantic symbols: the flute, the bird flying over the young man's head, the fruit trees, and the cattle sitting at the couple's feet. Painted with traditional coral and green tones and amply covered with gold strokes, the painting has a bright, glossy appearance. Elegant ornament surrounds the composition, and a more elaborate one decorates the sides of the box.

The box is made from papier mache. It sits flat with no legs and has a hinge at the top. The interior is red. Lacquer is in excellent condition. Signed with the artist's name, village, and year on the lid, and again on the bottom of the box.
