The miniscule heroine of this fairy tale is depicted here with her friend, the swallow. The swallow will later take Thumbelina to the flower fields, where she is to meet the fairy-prince; but for now, she has to nurse the ailing bird back to health. One of the most popular in Russia Christian Andersen's fairy tales, "Thumbelina" advocates following one's heart. The scene is dominated by warm brown and golden hues, with the faintly blue winter forest creating a contrasting background. Thumbelina's placement next to the bird. her violet dress, a green garland on her head, and a gentle face expression all remind of her delicate nature. The box is made from papier mache. It stands on three sculpted edges, has a hinge at the top, and opens to a red interior. Lacquer is in very good condition. Signed with the name of the artist, composition, and village.
