Palekh artist Vera Smirnova takes this composition from one of her masterpieces depicting the same tale (which you can see here). This one has been made much more affordable but still retains the essence of the work and its principal characters. Both the maiden and Irzhik (the lad) are dressed in extravagant clothing with rich colors and accented with radiant touches of gold. Irzhik's horse, meanwhile, strikes a handsome pose on the right side of the composition. The box has a skillfully drawn gold ornament which decorates the sides. It is made out of high quality papier mache and stands on four small legs. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year. A beautiful scene from a top Palekh artist.
