This box depicts the Tale of the Golden Cockerel. The left side of the scene shows the eunuch presenting the Tsar with a golden cockerel. On the far right side we see the cockerel perched atop a spire, ready to warn the Tsar of any possible dangers in his kingdom. The center depicts the eunuch asking for the Tsar's new bride as payment for the cockerel. (To find out what happens more, read the rest of this fairy tale here.) The box has a lovely traditional look to it filled with all of the elements that have made the village of Palekh famous throughout the world. The faces are particularly well done here as each character has its own individual expression. The box is already 10 years old, but has lost none of its luster. It is made of papier mache with a red lacquer interior. There is no hinge. It is signed with village, year, and artist (Belozerov).
