This magnificent box is entitled "Pokrovsky Cathedral on the Moat", more commonly known as "St. Basil's Cathedral". Anyone who has been to Moscow has likely seen this historic building rising majestically from Red Square. It has been a favorite of accomplished and aspiring artists for centuries, and one never seems to get tired of seeing the multicolored cupolas or multitude of geometric shapes throughout its surface. Fedoskino artist Borisova did this interpretation and placed St. Basil's in the cold months of winter, the quintessential Russian setting. Set against the backdrop of off white colors, the Cathedral looks very impressive indeed. Despite its size, though, the artist did a very nice job with the details and intricacies of the building. There is a lovely inlay of mother of pearl in one of the cupolas and the central spire. There is a gold line frame at the edge of the composition and another one that adorns the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and stands on four carved legs. The interior is red. Signed with the name of the artist, village, title and year.
