This box, entitled "The Jealous Husband", is based on the "The Tale of Merchant Kalashnikov" in which the tsar's guard (Kiribeevich) falls in love with the wife of Kalashnikov, and ends in a duel and the death of Kiribeevich. The seeds of the conflict are shown here in the expressive faces of the two bearded rivals, echoing the intensity of their circumstance. The old Russian architecture provides a great atmosphere for the scene, making its way to the background, and culminating in a white cathedral with gold leaf cupolas and orthodox crosses. A gold ornament frames the drawing and decorates the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the side. It stands on four small rounded legs. The box is signed at the bottom with the name of the artist, village and title.
