Why this box is entitled "Winter Night's Sleep" is not entirely clear, but there is one thing that you can definitely say about the box - it is quite beautiful! Two young women, maybe twins, make their way through the winter snow. One is holding a squirrel, the other an ornament. Perhaps they are going home at the end of a long day and will be safe and warm in their beds within minutes on this cold night. Their coats are very colorful and radiant gold leaf has been applied to parts of the design in their dress. It has also been incorporated into the sky in the sunset in the background. Part of one woman's dress carries over onto the side. A golden strip, with patches and lines of other colors mixed in, makes up the rest of the sides. The bottom is black and lays flat on the surface of the table. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the left. It is signed with the name of the artist, village and title.
