The fantastical world of K. and S. Komogorovy come alive in outer space in this sensational box that shows what really goes on in the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Elves, goddesses, and unicorns are among those traversing the blue tightrope that circles the planet. A pretty young woman, meanwhile, pulls a cord from the sun, and perhaps she is the reason behind the solar flares. The greenish moon to the right provides a lovely backdrop to the head of the unicorn. Some of the coolest looking characters in this work are the variety of comets that hurl towards the planet. Well, cool at least in the sense that two are wearing sun glasses! Just off to the side of the sun and moon are images from the earth below, corresponding to the time of day when these planetary objects are most stunning. The vivid colors of the box are accented with lines of gold that rival the intricacy and radiance of boxes found in the village of Palekh. (Unfortunately, it is very difficult to see the beautiful gold work in the photos here). The gold ornament that frames the drawing and adorns the side is also well done, culminating in a little flying saucer in front. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge. The sides and bottom are traditional black and the interior is red. On the bottom, the artist wrote their name, village, and title.
