This box is entitled "Young Apples" and we think it is a reference to the fairy tale "Ivan Tsarevich, the Firebird and the Gray Wolf", where Ivan goes out in search of the firebird who has been stealing apples, and ultimately ends up with Elena the Fair. During their adventures, they are helped by a gray wolf, like the one here. The box has vivid colors throughout and the details are quite sharp, as well. Fine lines of gold leaf are added to various objects, including the rainbow-like stream that comes down from above. (The pictures here do not do justice to the delicate gold work in the box.) The apple trees extend all the way to the left side, smartly breaking up the box's well done silver and gold ornament that frames the drawing. There is another silver and gold ornament that winds around the side. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge. The interior is red. Signed by the name of the artist (Molodkina), village and title. The artist is part of the highly regarded Molodkin family (she apparently is a sister to Daniil Molodkin), who are doing some of the most outstanding and creative work in the village.
