This allegorical work from Roman Chibisov features a pair of mythical sisters spinning the threads which represent the lives of all men. A gilded sun smiles upon the fair sister of fortune, who smiles among symbols of peace and plenty, while her darker sister spins twisted threads from a rainy wasteland of barren trees and carrion birds. Both wear gentle expressions of comfort and sympathy, reminding us that every life must have its ups and downs. A thin band of pale blue frames the scene, complimenting its subtle tones without distracting. Chibisov's signature floral decoration of sparkling gold leaf adorns the sides and flush base of the box. There is a hinge at the top, and the deep red lacquer interior bears the inscription, "Fortune and poverty, success and failure. In ancient times there were two sisters. Heavenly spinners, maidens of fate, who spun the thread of life of every person" on the underside of the lid, as well as the title, artist's name, village, and date of completion.
