Dmitry Rogatov's unusual style has earned him a place in the three most recent books on modern lacquer art, "Russian Lacquer Painting 21st Century", "New Visions; Russian Lacquer Minatures" and "Russian Lacquer Miniatures; Kholui, Mstiora, Palekh, Fedoskino". The domed lid of this box features the meeting of young Vasilisa and the fearsome witch, Baba Yaga. Soft swirls of smoky pastels accentuated with the warm golden glow of honey and ochre tones give a dreamlike quality to the scene, while beautifully complimenting the scintillating abalone inlays. The subtle gleam of the metallic silver background glints through the translucent portions of the scene, creating a lovely sense of depth while calling to mind the work of M. Vagner. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is deep red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.
