P. Borisov has combined realism and sculptural elements to create a dazzling interpretation of the fairy tale, "Thumbelina." The beautiful miniature maiden sits atop a lily pad as a frog insists that she marry his grandson. The pond seems an ominous swamp of tall grass, giant leaves, and placid water. A pair of snails inch slowly closer to the frog and the maiden, their stalks twitching as they eavesdrop. The conversation has attracted the attention of a butterfly as well, wose mother of pearl wings project from the box, as do Thumbelina's. The scen is beautifully painted, and continues on the right side of the box, adding to the sculptural feel. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on its flush base with the title, artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is a hinge on the left, and the interior is red lacquer. It comes with a companion base, painted the same deep, marbled green as the body of the box, which allows it to stand upright.
