A violent battle erupts beneath a black lacquer sky. Brilliantly colored horses rear and snort as Silver clad warriors attack with golden spears and swords. This box from 1979 by Palekh artist V. Isaev, is reminiscent of boxes painted by the founder of Palekh, Ivan Golikov. It is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.
