Morozko looks on in concern as the young daughter of a woodsman patiently waits for her father's return. Her head droops with fatigue, and the cold is starting to creep through her homespun clothes. She stares down at her father's axe, a symbol of his promise to return. The scene is well painted, in lush, creamy pastels. Subtle use of warm undertones give a sunset glow to the icy forest. The lacquer has thinned a bit with age, revealing the texture of the papier mache beneath, and has a few surface scratches, which do not threaten the painting below. The corners and area near the hinge are a bit worn, but the box is still in lovely condition for its age, and appears to be stable. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's initials (A.S.), and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush and has a small vintage USSR sticker attached. An impressive traditional work.
