Odette (2004)from Palekh by Mikhail NebogatovDimensions: 2.25" x 1.88"(5.50 x 4.70 cm) Gallery Price: $ 245.00 Internet Price: $ 225.00 None currently available |
Based on the ballet, "Swan Lake, " this ethereal work by Nebogatov features the tragic heroine, Odette. Trapped as a swan by a wicked sorcerer, she may only regain her true form at night. The moonlight glistens all around her as thin strokes of gold and silver. She emerges from the water in a graceful position, evocative of the ballet theme. One leg stretches out behind her, and her arms reach skyward as the last vestiges of the enchantment, her shimmering wings, melt into the night. The limited palette of cool pastels against a black lacquer background adds to the evening setting of the scene. The sides are decorated with a garland of gold acanthus leaves and silver blossoms. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is no hinge, and the interior is red lacquer. It stands on four round legs. A delightful, traditional scene.--BOX1316
