This enchanting cylindrical box by noted Mstera artist Valentin Tikhmirov tells the tale of the Snow Maiden. His work has appeared in several publications on lacquer art, and is featured in many museums. The great care and detail he puts into his work is apparent in this dazzling fairy tale scene. Her parents, Father Frost and Fairy Spring, wave goodbye as she sets off to explore the human world. An elderly couple, with no children of their own, happily adopt the otherworldly girl, welcoming her into their tiny cottage. The lid has her appearing before the Tsar with her friends. The entire court seems enchanted with her pale beauty! Spring emerges on the side of the box, and young lovers stroll through the vibrant countryside. The Snow Maiden joins her friends, only to melt away in the hot sun, with a faint promise that he will return next year. The scene is exquisitely painted, with an amazing amount of detail. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name (Tikhomirov), and village. There is no hinge, and the interior is red lacquer.
