The title of this box by Palekh artist Vera Smirnova is called "The Duel", but it is not your usual duel. This one features a knight (in shining armor on a white horse, of course) fighting a three headed dragon. The scene is intense, and Smirnova has made it even more vivid by working a good amount of radiant gold into the details, particularly into the dragon's threatening body. A pinch of red is added to more shiny gold in the sky creating an even more stunning image for the eye. Around the perimeter of the drawing, and on the sides, there are several classy well drawn gold borders. The box is made out of high quality paper mache, has a hinge at the top, and does not have legs. It is signed under the lid with the name of the artist, title, village and year. Under the lid, and on the bottom of the box, the artist has painted two very pretty gold designs, as well. This box is a true jewel, with a lot of excitement mixed in.
