For this this box Palekh artist Nina Suloeva has chosen to paint "The Sea Tsar and Vasilisa the Wise", a fairly tale written by Alexander Afanasyev. (A synopsis of the story can be read here. A number of different scenes from the story are depicted on the box, and Vasilisa stands on a patch of ground in the center holding two white doves. The scenes are rich in color and activity, and the intricacy of all the details bear the mark of a truly accomplished artist. Gold and silver lines and embellishments provide definition to the shapes and lend a rich glow to the entire box. Skillfully drawn gold and silver ornaments adorn both the perimeter at the top and on the sides It is made out of high quality paper mache, has a hinge, and opens up to a traditional red interior. It is signed with the name of the artist, village and title. Classy work!
