This box is based on the Jonathan Swift novel "Gulliver's Travels". The book consists of a series of voyages to different places by Gulliver, and this box depicts a scene from the first voyage to the island of Lilluput, inhabited by tiny people. Right next to Lilliput, separated by a channel. are the people of Blefuscu, the enemy of the Lilliputians. In this box, Gulliver stands tall, in the middle of the channel itself. He dwarfs a vessel from one of the two nations below, where a king and two advisors look up. The towering figure of Gulliver looms larger than life, or at least to the people of Lilliput and Blefuscu, that is certainly how it seems. Gulliver is sympathetically drawn with well defined features and commanding presence. The many parts to his outfit are all embellished with radiant gold lines, as is the architecture in the background, and the ships. The flowing channel, meanwhile, has rolling waves marked with with silver lines that stream past Gulliver's calves. The drawing is framed with a dot ornament on three sides which culminates into a fancier one on the bottom. Around the sides a gold and silver ornament looks very lovely and uniformly drawn throughout. The box is made out of high quality paper mache and sits on four small round legs. It has a hinge at the top. The artist wrote her name, village and year on the bottom of the drawing.
