The setting sun illuminates a terrifying yet magnificent scene: a ship overcome by the raging sea. With the mast ropes caught in the rock formation on the left, the vessel is tilted and the ocean waves rush onto it from all sides. The mixture of cool greens, blues, and grays dominate the composition. The warm orange sun rays reflecting on the water and a white seagull approaching from the distance add an element of calm to this otherwise turbulent scene and complete its nostalgic mood.

The box is made from papier mache. It sits flat with no legs, and has a hinge at the top. The interior is red. The bottom of the box is signed with the initials of the artist and name of the village. There are a few small chippings in lacquer on the rim of the lid, but they are only visible under close inspection. Otherwise box and lacquer are in good condition.
