Tsar Dadon gazes in awe at the magestic Queen Shamakha, as she invites him to dine with her inside the tent. The sappherine walls of the tent cover the bright red interior, with a view of a rich feast served on a golden carpet. To complement the exotic nature of the scene, Queen Shamakha is painted wearing traditional arabian dance costume and white headware (such as those worn in the desert). The tsar's army guards stand on both sides of the beautiful tent, their gold armour shining brightly against the black background of the composition and echoing the apparel of the king. The painting is incredibly detailed and rich in color, making this work appear as a shrunk version of an originally larger piece.

This gorgeous little box is made from papier mache. It sits flat (no legs) and opens without a hinge. The interior is traditional red. The composition is decorated with an elegant gold ornament, and a more elaborate, gold and silver ornament is painted on the sides of the box. Signed with the name of the artist, village, year, and product number. Lacquer is in very good condition.
