Angel Gabriel descends from the heavens to tell Mary that she has been favored by God to bear His Son. Virgin Mary's face is reflecting quiet joy, as she lowers her head and hears the news. The white dove soaring above the three figures sends out rays of gold, foreshadowing another biblical scene of God's display of approval on the one who loves and serves Him. The floating green garments of Mary and the angels aid the etherial feel of the piece, corresponding to its heavenly subject. The elements which remind the viewer that the scene is taking place on earth are the wooden pieces of furniture, articles on the ground, and town and folk visible in the distance. The gentle facial expressions of Mary and the angels evoke the peaceful mood of the event which is to follow the Annunciation: the birth of Jesus.
This is another joint work by two Palekh artists, Vera Smirnova and Uriy Pozhidaev, in which Vera Smirnova painted the faces and Uriy was the author of the scene. The work is painted on high quality papier mache box. The box rests on four small round legs, has a hinge on the left, and opens to a red interior. The composition is surrounded by an elegant gold and silver ornament, and a larger, more complex gold and silver ornament decorates the sides of the box. Signed with the names of the artists, village, and year. This work was recently done and lacquer is in pristine condition.
