The king is returning from his journey with a new bride: the mysterious Queen Shamakha. The eunuch, who has saved the kingdom and was promised anything he desires in return, approaches the royal carriage with a shameless request: to receive the new Queen as a reward! The king raises himself up in rage, while the queen is shyly looking away. The two horses in front of the carriage are anxiously trying to disengage from the bridle, while the coachman is fearfully looking up at the golden cockerel atop one of the distant towers of the kingdom. The painting is rich in color and pervaded with gold overlays; the carriage, the domes, the golden cockerel, and the garment of the coachman all add to its luxurious, royal atmosphere. The composition is adorned with an elegant gold ornament, and a simpler gold ornament decorates the sides of the box.
The box is made from papier mache. It sits flat, and has a hinge at the top. The interior is red. Signed with artist's initials, name of the composition, and village. Lacquer is in excellent condition throughout.
