The Firebird (c.2010)from Kholui by SoninaDimensions: 2.00" x 2.00" x 3.25"(5.08 x 5.08 x 8.26 cm) Inspired by the fairytales: Ivan Tsarevich the Firebird and the Gray Wolf Gallery Price: $ 235.00 Internet Price: $ 215.00 None currently available |
The fantastic Firebird is perched on an apple tree, devouring its fruit, when Ivan Tsarevich sneaks up and grabs it by the tail. But the bird manages to get away, leaving Ivan with its bright feather. Ivan's light yellow garment contrasts beautifully with the burgundy background of the scene; the colors aid the magical feel of the work. This adorable box is made in the shape of a samovar - traditional Russian water heating container - and has a tea pot at the top, which serves as a handle to the lid of the box. The samovar is decorated with several layers of gold ornament.
The box is made from papier mache. It's elevated above the ground just slightly by four sculpted edges on the bottom. The box opens without a hinge and has a red interior. Lacquer is in good condition, with the exception of a small chip on the side just under the lid. The bottom is signed with the name of the artist, composition, and village.
