There is a palpable suspense in this scene from the most famous and complex fairy tale by Pavel Bazhov. As the malachite box is being handed over in a solemn atmosphere, the Mistress of the Copper Mountain ominously appears from the grove on the right. The Mistress of the Copper Mountain - a morally ambiguous character - has a unique quality to mesmerize people and make them so concentrated on their work, that they become distanced from their family. This time she will claim to herself the young Tanyushka. The painting is very skillfully done, with subtle color transitions, a pleasant balance of warm autumn hues with green and emerald, and detailed depiction of faces and garments. Decorated with a carefully painted gold and silver ornament on the lid the sides of the box.
The box is made from papier mache, stands on four small legs, and has a hinge at the top. The interior is red. Signed with the name of artist, village, composition name, and year. Lacquer is in excellent condition.
