Ivan tries to catch the fabled firebird, often thought of as the symbol of happiness. Most manage to grab only a feather, but this is a fairy tale and there is a good chance that Ivan will have better luck. The box is painted beautifully with traditional techniques by the Kholui artist Gagaeva. The firebird really lights up the scene with its vivid red feather and radiant gold lines. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the top. It sits flat. The name of the artist, village and title is written at the bottom of the composition. "Made in USSR" is written on the bottom of the box. Though not dated, we estimate that this box was done sometime in the 1980s, or late 70s. The lacquer has just minor wear and no cracks or significant damage.
