This little jewel shows the Virgin of Vladimir icon in the center flanked on both the right and left by two angels carrying orthodox crosses. The miniature paintings are done on papier mache and set inside german silver. Each little work is delicately done with very fine lines of gold leaf creating the contours of the clothing, wings, and other parts. The two flaps showing the angels can be folded in and latched into place, and the result is an exquisite metal egg with a cross on top. A separate stand, also of german silver, is included which holds it gently in place. There is even a closed hook in back where one could hang the piece. Even after having it many years, we are sure that it will always be a special moment when you take the egg and open it to reveal the Virgin, Jesus and angels inside. The work is not signed, in accordance with the traditions of centuries of icon painting.
