The wife of the fisherman shakes her head at her husband's failure to ask the magical fish to grant him a favor. The chilly wind blows the waves into a froth behind her, while the open doorway of their small, dugout cottage is draped with fishing nets. Excited that he had seen such a creature, the fisherman never thought to ask for any of the numerous things the couple needed, most obviously a new washtub. The cracked tub sits by the wife's feet as she dreams of a new one. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is no hinge, and the interior is red lacquer. The flush base bears the words, "Made in Russia," and a hand painted Palekh insignia. A delightful fairy tale work by L. Vyugina.--BOX1398
