In warm, rich tones, this large box by M.Danilova depicts the greedy wife, from "The Tale of the Fish and Fisherman," enjoying her last few moments as emperor. She sits, grandly enthroned, overlooking her sumptuous citadel. An attendant fans her as she screams at her husband that it is not enough, she wishes to be lord of the seas and command the magic fish herself. The fisherman hastily heads back towards the shore, and the awaiting fish, with a look between fear and sadness. Only the older palace guard looks at all sympathetic, the younger guard is intent on the jester, who has fallen on the floor laughing at the spectacle. The fish appears in the choppy sea behind the palace, under a cloudy sky. The grand elements of the palace are precisely done. The rich draperies and rugs bear marvelous details. The skyline of the citadel is a patchwork of brightly colored rooftops, in various shapes. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and title. It has a hinge on the left, and a red lacquer interior. It stands on four round feet and bears the Mstera insignia. A delightful fairy tale piece.
