A floppy-eared beagle is the subject of this smallish box by Palekh artist Evgeniya Nebogatova, whose work is featured in "Russian Lacquer, Legends and Fairy Tales". The box is a departure from the usual style of Nebogatova. It almost looks as if the tip of the dog's tongue is hanging out just a little, but no, once you realize it is the bottom of his other ear everything looks quite natural. A classic gold and silver ornament intricately decorates the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache, has a hinge at the top, and sits on four small round legs. Signed under the lid with the name of the artist, village, year and title.
