The classic troika scene is given an impressionistic makeover in this stunning work by Fedoskino artist E. A. Potekhin. The soft tones and minimalist background create a striking illusion of winter twilight and billowing snow as the thundering troika emerges fom from the snowy countryside with a great clatter of hooves and reins. The red cheeks and nose of the driver attest to the chill, but the passengers keep happily warm in one another's arms. This notoriously fast and thrilling ride was a popular excuse for Russian couples to embrace centuries before the advent of the horror movie, and is still enjoyed today. This box is made of high quality papier mache, and is signed on the lid with the artist's name. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is deep red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.
