"Oh, my guests, have you been travelling long? To where?" asks the inscription on this elegant rendition of The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Tikhomirov. Valentin Tikhomirov's work is featured in museums and books about lacquer art, including the recent publication, "Russian Lacquer Miniatures." He often uses muted colors and intricate patterns to create his stunning works, including this unusual variation of the classic Tsar Saltan theme. It features Tsar Saltan and his long lost son, Prince Gvidon, each addressing a group of sailors at either end of the triptych style composition. Prince Gvidon, hoping to lure his father to the enchanted island city he rules, welcomes passing sailors and shows the the wonders of his kingdom, knowing that word of the splendid isle will reach Tsar Saltan. On the opposite side, Tsar Saltan is regaled with tales of Gvidon's lands, and resolves to see the wonders for himself. The center panel has the reunion of Tsar Saltan and his family, with Prince Gvidon, his mother the queen, and the enchanted Swan Princess greeting each other warmly, while the queen's sisters, whose jealous prank caused the long separation, shrink guiltily into a corner. This box is made of high quality papier mache, and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. The elaborate border framing the lid is echoed in the thick band decorating the sides. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.
