Cinderella type stories featuring clever, resourceful heroines are a favorite subject matter of Evgeniya Nebogatova, and Khavroshechka is no exception. Khavroshechka's stepmother forces her to do all of the chores, but, luckily for Khavroshechka, her one friend is a magical cow, who lets her nap while it does all of the work. Enraged and suspecting a trick, Khavroshechka's stepmother has her own three daughters spy on the girl. On finding Khavroshechka's secret, the cruel woman slaughters the cow, only to see a fruit tree emerge from its grave. Drawn by the promise of succulent fruit after a long journey, a passing prince offered marriage to whomever plucked it from the tree. The three stepsisters tried to reach the fruit, but their pretty clothes cannot distract the birds who guard the tree from their inner ugliness, and they are pecked mercilessly with each attempt. Khavroshechka climbs the tree without incident, and retrieves the fruit, one last gift from her departed friend. The scene is dramatically painted in rich salmon and green, sparkling with thick golden and silver accents. Nebogatova;s undulating style creates an unmistakable feeling of movement and life, while ordinary barnyard pets add authenticity. This box is made of high quality; papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests on four curved feet.
