The thin sliver of moon is no match for the brilliant glow of the legendary firebird, whom Ivan has captured. The earth below seems a tiny fairy country of miniature turrets, ships, and spires. The scene is dramatically painted in bold colors against a rich black background, with carefully placed highlights adding the illusion of moonlit countryside. An elaborate border of gold frames the scene, and is repeated on the sides of the box. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name and village (O.
