The tale of the Snowmaiden unfolds on the sides of this large box by Golubeva before coming to its conclusion in a spectacular finale on the lid. The tale begins at the front, with the Snowmaiden leaving her parents, Father Frost and Faerie Spring, to visit the human world. It continues with the Tsar's messenger announcing a great festival. The rear has the Snowmaiden's first glimpse of the handsome Lel, with whom she is instantly smitten, and the admiration of a young man whose intended weeps at his behavior. Finally, the festival draws near, and the village comes alive with preparations. Young and old alike have donned their finery and joined the celebration on the lid. Even the forest creatures cavort among floating garlands and chase butterflies, knowing that their friend, the Snowmaiden, will not let them come to harm. Love hangs heavy in the air as new couples form and old bonds are renewed around the bonfire. Caught up in the moment, the Snowmaiden wishes to be able to feel love, but the new emotion coupled with the warm rays of light are too much for her frozen body. She takes a last look at her new found love before the horseman of the bright spring sun arrives to spirit the icy beauty home to her parents and calls out goodbyes, promising to return with the winter frost. The scene is beautifully painted in bold, rich colors which capture the energy of the spring festival. A wealth of tiny details draws the eye and bring the scene to life. Each of the characters has been given a distinct personality, adding to the story. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. A truly magnificent work.--BOX1056
