Palekh artist Evgeniya Nebogatova has painted this very lovely work showing the ending to the fairy tale "Thumbelina", when Thumbelina meets a fairy prince just her size, the two wed, and she receives her wings so that they can travel from flower to flower together. The box has a very fitting celebratory and expressive look to it, and the faeries seem right at home among the flowers and beautifully flowing lines of the stems and leaves. The box looks so much better in person, too, where the fine gold and silver lines are well defined and intricately provide shape the clothing and wings of each faerie. Nebogatova adorns the top with a simple dot ornament, and a more elaborate one circles around the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and stands on four small legs. It has a hinge at the top. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year. A gorgeous example of the inimitable style of Nebogatova!
