Nicholas II ruled Russia from 1894 to 1917, the last tsar of the Romanov dynasty. His forced abdication in March 1917 was an event that profoundly changed the course of world history, and is the subject of this magnificent plaque shown here, a joint effort between two talented Russia artists.
Renowned Palekh painter Vera Smirnova did the intricate drawing of the tsar's face and clothing. Using egg tempera paints, multiple layers of lacquer, and brushes that taper down to a few hairs from the tail of a squirrel, Smirnova masterfully depicts the image of the tsar in realistic detail. Portrait painting on a miniature scale simply does not get better than this. Smirnova is a member of the prestigious Russian Union of Artists and her works can be found in museums and private collections throughout the world.
The elaborate frame for the portrait, meanwhile, filled with replica medallions, coins and other memorabilia from that era was done by Ivanovo artist Anna Garusova. Truly stunning and the buyer will enjoy analyzing each item and artifact that Garusova and chosen to put in the work. The plaque is covered in glass and made to hang on the wall. It presently resides in our gallery and needeless to say it a lot of attention from all who visit.
